We are supposed to get 3 inserts this Sunday. A Smart Source, Red Plum and Proctor and Gamble insert.
Amend: According to http://www.confessionsofacouponer.com/2011/04/sunday-coupon-preview-2/ we may have up to 6 inserts this Sunday. Hmmmm Can I get the Chicago paper? Will it be pretty close to what the Twin Cities will have? I may just have to put a call in to Gma....

Groupon Photobook Deal Today and Tomorrow
If you like making photobooks, here's a groupon deal going on today and tomorrow. $35 for a $100 gift certificate. (that's a 65% savings). I have used both Blurb and Picaboo for making photobooks for the kids. I really like both. In my opinion, there is soooo much more you can do with these 2 programs than what Shutterfly or other places like that offer. And not to toot my own horn or anything (or to say that I have a great skill in making these books either) but I've gotten lots of compliments on the books, and all my kids LOVE them.
The Fine Print
- Expires Oct 20, 2011
- Limit 1 per person. Redeem starting 4/25. Valid toward tax and shipping. Valid for photo books, cards, and calendars. Not valid with other offers. May redeem across multiple orders.
- See the rules that apply to all deals
Please check out Picaboo's website before you purchase the groupon so you're sure it's something you're interested in. With the Picaboo deal (I've only made one photobook with them) I ended up still spending an extra $10 (so my total came to $110 before I used the groupon, and after the groupon I spent a total of $45). But I was also trying to catch up on a few years for one of my kids, so there were a lot of pages in that book! Also, I have seen this offer about every 2 months, so if it's something you're interested in, but not right now...another one will come along soon. (There are at least 2 cities that are offering this deal right now, Chicago and Phoenix). I do these books in place of scrapbooking or spending $ printing out pictures and buying photo albums. They also take up a lot less space too. Have I sold you yet? haha. And I'm not receiving any commission on this deal either.

Starbucks on Earth Day
mmmm...this Friday morning, I plan to stop at Starbucks with my monogrammed S travel mug, and fill up with a hot tea. Then hop on a train to Chicago for a "3 best girl friends from my childhood who are turning 30" wknd.
Words from the Wise and not so wise (me)
Not that anyone asked for my 2 cents, but I'll give it anyway,
It's overwhelming at first.
I just decided to learn a little every week.
And tried to keep in mind what Carrie at PYD says.
"They'll always be another sale"
Good advice to remember, for me anyway.
-my mom
Yes! I would have to add tho, at least keep buying the sunday newspaper so you have the coupons. There have been a few different weeks when I've "taken a break", or didn't buy the paper (especially if there weren't going to be an inserts in the paper)also. I know other's that are more experienced in this do the same too. But more coupons will come along and there will be more sales.

Birthday Freebies
Here's a list I'm going to start that has freebies for signing up at stores or restaurant's websites for birthdays!
If you click on the store name, it should have a link. Please let me know if any do not work.
http://www.birthdayfreebies.com/index.php
This website lets you set up an account for free and tells you of restaurants by your zip code that offer free desserts and/or a song on your birthday. Most of the ones for my area, are sit down restaurants, and I have to dine in to get the free dessert.

Way to go girl!!!
Sam's Club: Free entrance for non-members, this weekend, April 15-17
Stop by Sam’s Club this weekend (April 15-17, 2011) and you can get in free even if you’re not a member. Best of all, there’s no upcharge. You’ll pay the same prices that members do.
If you do a lot of baking, I highly recommend buying your yeast in bulk from Sam’s Club. Last I checked, it was $4 for two-pounds, which is much lower than you’ll pay at the grocery store. We always stock up once a year and keep the yeast in our freezer to use as needed.
**thanks moneysavingmom.com**
I let my membership lapse in January...but haven't been there since last April (except for two times. Once-last summer for my parents anniversary food, and then recently with my SIL) But I might have to check it out and get a few things....You can also check out most prices online as well to price compare.

A tip for printing out computer coupons
Most coupons you can print out 2 times, so make use of that!
Hy-Vee deals for 4/13-4/19
Doritos 12 oz bag $1.88
Purchase 4 Kellogg's cereals: rice krispies, froot loops, apple jacks, corn pops, frosted flakes or 12 ct pop tarts and receive a print out coupon for $4 off of a gallon of milk. Must buy 4 boxes of cereal and limit offer per coupon and one coupon per customer
These cereals are 4 for $10, so 2.50 each
Q's to use: $1/2 rice krispies http://www2.kelloggs.com/Coupon.aspx (will need to register an account)
$1.50/3 in the 4/10 RP insert
Total: as low as $2/box of cereal each and a free gallon of milk. I aim for $1 for a box of cereal, so not the best deal, but it's not full price if you are needing cereal and milk.
Thurs/Fri/Sat sale only: (These 2 or 3 day only sales are usually the best deals that Hy-Vee has)
4 lbs of strawberries for 3.99 ($1/lb)
Dole classic iceburg 12 oz or 14 oz Cole slaw bag .77cents
Hy-Vee potato salad 16 oz 2 for $3

Kids Summer Reading Program = Free books
We did this last summer and the kids loved it! A tip that I'll follow this year...don't wait until the end of summer to get the free book...as it's pretty picked over by then.
Barnes and Noble - Kids from Grades 1-6, read any 8 books and record them on the journal (a form you print out), then choose a free book from their list.
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/summerreading/index.asp
Borders Books - Kids 12 and under read 10 books and record them on the form you print out and then choose a free book.
They did it last year, and I don't see anything online yet...but will keep checking.

Tips for saving $ on groceries and other items
Menu plan for the week. Try to buy all the groceries you need for that week in one shopping trip (even if it's multiple stores.) To me, it pays to haul the kids in to a store for a free gallon of milk instead of making a separate trip later in the week because 1- it's extra gas, 2-I usually end up buying a few more items during that 2nd trip later.
2. Budget your grocery $. Then use cash to pay. Once it's gone...that's it for the week....so I try to spend wisely.
3. Make a grocery list and stick to it. That helps immensely with overbuying! If you're going to want to buy a treat, put it on the list ahead of time and plan for it.
4. Something else we do to save money...we don't buy a lot of chips and cookies. (I'm sure that sounds boring) Usually if we have chips it's for an occasion or they were a super good deal. Cookies-we tend to have cookies in the house, but I make them homemade with Betty Crockers' recipe. We typically have all the ingredients for chocolate chip cookies (all I have to buy are the chocolate chips). Usually then I have 20 neighbor kids over gobbling them up.
5. I use PYD's price list for items...cereal and boxed items I try to spend $1 or less on, and fruit is $1/lb or less.
6. Birthday cakes...I buy the box mix and a can of frosting and make my own cakes or cupcakes. They are NOT professional by any means...but I only spend about $2 or less on the entire cake instead of $10-$20.
7. Shop clearance. It takes a little thinking ahead for this...but sometimes if I have time, I'll look in the birthday isle (for example) and see if there are plates/napkins that one of the kids would like for their next "themed" birthday. For items like that...I usually don't buy it unless it's 75% off then.
8. We don't eat out often. If we do, we have coupons, or go somewhere when the kids can eat free or really cheap. There's also Restaurant.com. I never pay full price for those coupons either. Very often you can get the $25 restaurant.com coupon for $2 or $3. Watch PYD...she usually posts when the deal happens.
9. At target we bring our own bags and save .05 for each bag. Also we have a Target Redcard and get 5% off each purchase, plus I've selected my kids' school online to recieve the 1% of my purchase amount that Target donates to them. This credit card is only helpful if you pay it off each month. A friend just reminded me that you can pay for your purchase with your card, then walk over to customer service and pay it off with cash (so you can still get the discount, but you don't have a balance). I am going to have to remember that from now on!
I'll add more as I think of them

Tips for making this work
1. Wait for a sale, use a store coupon plus a manufacture coupon to get your rock bottom price. For help knowing what some of those are, go here. It will help you get started...then as you become a good deal finder you can add/change your own...or maybe you're brand loyal and can adjust your list too.
2. For things not related to grocery, I am signed up on Groupon. I've gotten a few photo books for the kids that I would have made anyway for at least 1/2 the price with a groupon. I've jumped when there's been GAP groupons...$25 for a $50 groupon (and then i shop the clearance rack, or if we don't need anything, then sometimes I've bought Jon a pair of jeans...he has never found another brand or style that he loves as much as this one style that GAP has, and he wears them until there are holes, and then wears them some more.)
3. I aim for 75% or more off the full price...that's generally "rock bottom". (Big purchases like cars/appliances/etc are obviously excluded from this statement). I feel like I'm doing well tho if it's at least 60% off.
4. Remember that there will be some "dead" weeks...when there just aren't any deals you "need". Then there will be other weeks when you can really stock up.
5. Just because it's on sale and you have 2 coupons for it...if you don't NEED it, DON'T buy it. When I first started, I was doing this, and told myself it was so "I could get practice". ha! But now I've learned. My one exception: If it will be at a zero cost out of my pocket (FREE) and it's something that I can donate, and I'm already at the store with my coupons, then I'll get it.

The Stores
So where do I shop?
I typically go to: and where I find the lists of the good deals:
Super Target http://www.totallytarget.com/
Cub http://www.pocketyourdollars.com/
Walgreens http://www.pocketyourdollars.com/
Aldi's http://www.pocketyourdollars.com/
Hy-Vee I have to figure these deals out myself, so I look at their online ad and if there are items I'm interested in, I'll look in PYD's coupon database to see if there are any match-ups. I haven't found a website that has someone who regularly figures out the deals each week, so I gotta' do the work.
Local grocery store - same here-no awesome couponer in the area that blogs about this grocery store, so I am trying my best.
I rarely go to Walmart. I just have not had good luck with them and using coupons, and their prices are NEVER the same from one store to the next, even in the same town...so I just don't bother usually.
A couple other blogs of note:
http://www.becentsable.net/
http://www.confessionsofacouponer.com/
http://www.couponmom.com/login.php (I use for the coupon database and to know what inserts I can purge)
http://moneysavingmom.com/store_deals/category/trader-joes this one i watch for trader joe's
The first two listed usually have a lot of the same deals listed as PYD, but occasionally they'll find some online deal that's good. Like a good groupon, or a FB offer or if there's a good coupon out there.

Learn the Lingo...
Q's = coupons
mfg = manufacture
SS = Smart Source insert
RP = Red Plum insert
GM = General Mills insert
PG = Proctor and Gamble insert
how's that for starters? I'll add more as we go on...

How to save your coupons.
Here are some pictures...
I have a bag that I keep everything I need in.
I also have a pen, scissors and an accordian file folder. Buy one that has many pockets in it tho. I started off with one that only had 5 slots and it didn't work out very well.
This is personal preference, but here's what works for me. My first slot is my receipts. I keep them for a few months...just in case I need them for something.
2nd slot is for mail in rebate forms currently going on.
A few empty slots
Then I have one for MFG (manufacture) coupons. These can be ones I've printed off of a website, or maybe clipped and ended up not using them because the store was out of the item or the price wasn't the same, or whatever.
I have a slot of "Misc Coupons". This would be for any other stores, JoAnn, Michaels, Subway, A&W...you get the idea.
Next is Target's coupons.
There's one for Walgreens (I keep the monthly walgreens book in this slot)
There's one for Walgreens (I keep the monthly walgreens book in this slot)
Then one for my Smart Source inserts.
Followed by RedPlum
Then P&G
and finally General Mills.
I keep all these coupons together in this file thing. Then about every 3 months I'll go through and weed out what has expired. There is a great website that tells you what inserts still have coupons that are "active". (more on that another time). Any inserts that are expired, I'll take out and put in a separate file to hold onto because Cub accepts expired Q's (coupons) up to 3 months past the expiration date. Once that has past then I recycle the insert.
Because I'm a list person, I also have a slot that holds a single piece of paper. I keep track every week on that sheet of the stores I went to that week, how much I spent at the store and what my savings were. Then at the end of the week, I like to find the "winner" store and circle it. (I know, I'm weird) Also I do a final total end of the week as well. I started it because in the beginning I wanted to track and see if the amount I spent each week decreased and if my savings increased. I still remember the very first time my savings was more than my spending. I had to call my mom just about that. PS...once both sides of the sheet are full, the winners go into a notebook along with the spending/savings amount. It is also helpful for me because then I can keep track of when certain good deals are....like say when winter or summer clothes will be on clearance-so then I can prepare for that the next year. This may sound like a lot (the list/record keeping thing) but honestly it takes me less than 5 minutes, and I do it when I'm cleaning out my wallet or purse.
Side note: I have been buying most of my kids clothes in sizes bigger when they are on clearance for the next year. Then the next year, we get to pull out a bin full of "brand new" clothes that were really inexpensive. Another weird thing I do that I think is fun...I keep the tags on it, but write the price I paid for it...then when I pull out a clothing item, I can remember "oh, I only paid .49 cents for this?! wow, awesome deal, way to go shannon!" haha (or maybe I'll be like "what? i paid .49cents too much for this? what was i thinking?") more haha's.
Something else you can do right now...
Read this. http://www.pocketyourdollars.com/2010/03/three-stages-of-a-frugal-zealot/
She's very true...at least in my case. I remember reading it and thinking "Is she spying on me? Is she in my head? How does she know I'm doing/thinking this right now?!" I went through all four stages...and I've been doing this for a year. You will not see immediate savings TODAY. This whole thing takes time. To me, time is money, and I have time or I make the time.
Before I started, I always would look at my grocery shopping receipt and feel like I was constantly paying twice as much for everything than I really wanted to pay.
So luckily I came across PYD and Carrie, and they changed my life, and helped our budget! I had tried couponing before, but was never successful and would give up time after time. As it turns out, I didn't know the the correct art of it.

On getting started...
Step 1. Just start buying the Sunday paper. Take the coupon inserts, write the date at the top (today I would write 4/10/11) and set them aside. Read the rest of the paper (if you do that) and recycle it or let the kids use it for projects.
Which paper to buy? Of the papers that I have access to, I personally like the Star Tribune. I've found that a) it usually has really good coupons and b) usually they are higher value ones. Something I always do when I buy the paper is look at the spine of the coupon inserts and verify that it's the Minneapolis Star Tribune. There are different inserts for the out of town papers, and I usually don't find them to have as nice of coupons. The ST (star tribune) doesn't deliver to us, so I have to buy it at our local gas station. If you can get it delivered to your house, I'm sure you would be able to save more money that way. Also, when you buy the paper, just double check to be sure the correct inserts are in it...sometimes there are others who sneak extra inserts unfortunately.
Step 2. I get coupons from other places than just the newspaper. There are a few online sites that offer coupons as well. You'll have to install a few things on your computer, and have access to a printer of course. It's all very easy. I have never had a problem with viruses from the coupon printer things I've downloaded. I've read other places that they are safe as well. Here are a few websites that I print from. Target.com, RedPlum, SmartSource and Coupons.com. I believe that if you can print coupons from any of these 3, then you'll be able to get coupons from any other website. (I'm not a computer person so I don't know all the correct lingo, etc). For instance many times a company, say Kellogg's, their own website will have coupons available on it to print off. If you just start with Target.com or Coupons.com and on their page (middle left side) try to print a coupon, the website will realize you don't have it activated on your computer and should walk you through it all. You need this because when the coupons print off, they have a bar code on them for the cashiers to scan. Tip: set your printer to print in grey scale or black ink so you don't waste precious color ink!
Step 3. Sign yourself up for a "coupon" email account. Many times offers that you want to print off, the company wants some information from you, so I have a spare email account that all that junk can go to.
These are a few things you can do right now!

How it all started...
Somehow I came across the website http://www.pocketyourdollars.com/ one year ago (almost exactly). I can't seem to remember tho how I found out about her...maybe my mom or sisters can help jog my memory. This is getting off to a very exciting start, huh?! haha. This blog isn't going to be professional in any way...just a little outlet for my coupon hobby or if I find a good deal I want to share, I'll post about it on here. I'll share a few tips too that have helped me along the way. If you want something more professional, please check out PYD (pocketyourdollars). Also I won't be posting every deal that's out there...probably mostly the ones that I find helpful. So if you want more...please look at other websites. There are soooo many out there! One last thing....even tho I've been doing this for a year, I still consider myself a newbie...just please keep that in mind! Happy Couponing and deal finding!
