1. Wait for a sale, use a store coupon plus a manufacture coupon to get your rock bottom price. For help knowing what some of those are, go here. It will help you get started...then as you become a good deal finder you can add/change your own...or maybe you're brand loyal and can adjust your list too.
2. For things not related to grocery, I am signed up on Groupon. I've gotten a few photo books for the kids that I would have made anyway for at least 1/2 the price with a groupon. I've jumped when there's been GAP groupons...$25 for a $50 groupon (and then i shop the clearance rack, or if we don't need anything, then sometimes I've bought Jon a pair of jeans...he has never found another brand or style that he loves as much as this one style that GAP has, and he wears them until there are holes, and then wears them some more.)
3. I aim for 75% or more off the full price...that's generally "rock bottom". (Big purchases like cars/appliances/etc are obviously excluded from this statement). I feel like I'm doing well tho if it's at least 60% off.
4. Remember that there will be some "dead" weeks...when there just aren't any deals you "need". Then there will be other weeks when you can really stock up.
5. Just because it's on sale and you have 2 coupons for it...if you don't NEED it, DON'T buy it. When I first started, I was doing this, and told myself it was so "I could get practice". ha! But now I've learned. My one exception: If it will be at a zero cost out of my pocket (FREE) and it's something that I can donate, and I'm already at the store with my coupons, then I'll get it.
